SKD61

SKD61 is a tool with high wear resistance and high strength, which is widely used in mechanical tools, cutters, molds and other fields. Commonly used to manufacture die-casting dies, extrusion dies, forging dies, hot stamping dies and plastic molds for injection molding applications. The high temperature resistance properties of SKD61 tool steel make it ideal for applications requiring high temperatures, such as the production of automotive parts, aerospace parts and industrial machinery.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Hardness:

Before heat treatment, it is about HRC15~20 (HB200~230)

After heat treatment, the internal HRC is approximately 40°~45°, and the surface HV1000±100

Tensile strength: 1100-1300MPa

Yield strength: 900-1100MPa

Elongation: 12-20%

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Density: 7.85g/cm³

Thermal expansion coefficient: 11.8×10^-6/℃

Thermal conductivity: 41.9W/(m·K)

Wear resistance: After heat treatment, 52-54HRC, excellent wear resistance

Polishing performance: The grains of SKD61 material are small and uniform, which can produce a smoother surface and good surface finish.

HEAT TREATMENT

Quenching:

First stage preheating: 500-550℃

Second stage preheating: 750-800 ℃

Blow air cooling or high pressure gas cooling, etc., into the tempering furnace at 100-150℃.

Tempering:

Preheating: 300-350℃

Tempering Heating: 550-680℃

The air is cooled to room temperature and tempered three times. Quenching temperature 1000 ~ 1050 degrees, hardness 50 ~ 55HRC, heat treatment deformation is small, the surface can be nitrided, so that the processed products have better wear resistance.

Cryogenic treatment:

In order to obtain the highest hardness and dimensional stability, the die is cryogenically cooled immediately after quenching to – 70 – 80℃ for 3 – 4 hours, and then tempered. The hardness of the cryogenically treated tool or die is 1 – 3 HRC higher than that of the conventional heat treatment. For parts with complex shape and large size change, cryogenic treatment is dangerous to crack in production.

Nitriding treatment:

After nitriding, a hardened layer with high hardness and corrosion resistance is formed on the surface of the die or workpiece.

FORGING

For forging SKD61 tool steel, first slowly Preheat to 750°C(1382°F), soak enough time, then rapidly heat to 1050-1100 °C(1922-2030°F). then start forging, ensure the forging temperature higher than 850°C(1562°F). Cool SKD61 tool steel must be slowly after H13 steel forging finished.
